In 1897 and 1898 [when a group of white American businessmen living in Hawai’i were pushing for US annexation], 98% of all Native Hawaiians throughout all the [Hawai’ian] islands signed a petition to the US Congress asking the US not to annex Hawai`i. (Fact and photo source)
Of course, the islands were annexed and, eventually, made into a state, against the wishes of nearly all native Hawaiians. And now a former Hawaiian kid is our president, but I’d be lying if I said I thought he was going to address these issues—he went to the Punahou School in Honolulu, after all. Punahou started out as a school for the children of missionaries, and is known for whitifying select non-whities and grooming them, along with the children of influential members of Honolulu’s business and political community, to accept their place at the top of the capitalist/patriarchal/consumerist/shitass American society, as practiced in Hawai’i.
